Ties generally come in a few different widths. Each size is meant to compliment different body types and outfits. Here are the most common tie widths available:
1. Standard
A traditional man’s tie is usually 3 1/8” – 3 ½” inches wide, which is great for men that have broad shoulders or are wide across the chest. This is perfect for those that like a traditional look and pairs well with a wide jacket lapel.
Men that are not as wide, but still like the traditional look can go with a tie that is 3” wide. It can be paired with the classic width jacket lapel.
2. Narrow
A narrow tie is 2 ½” – 2 ¾” inches wide and works with a slim jacket lapel. This is a common tie width and is considered a safe option for men that aren’t sure which width is right for them. Also, as a note, if you want to add a tie bar, you’ll want to make sure that it is 1 ½” side.
3. Skinny
The skinny tie is perfect for fashion-forward men that want to make a statement. This width pairs well with a very thin jacket lapel. Tall, thin men usually look best in a long, skinny tie.
